Donald Trump Defends US Decision Allowing India to Accept Russian Oil

Donald Trump says US allowed India to buy Russian oil to ease global supply pressure.

US President Donald Trump said the United States allowed India to continue purchasing Russian oil temporarily in order to ease pressure on global energy markets. Speaking to reporters aboard the presidential aircraft Air Force One, Trump addressed recent comments by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent regarding Washington’s decision to permit the arrangement. The statement comes at a time when global oil supply concerns have intensified. Much of the pressure has been linked to instability and conflict in the Middle East.

Trump said the move was intended to provide short-term relief to the global energy market. When asked whether the US administration was considering additional measures to stabilise oil supply, he indicated that such options were being evaluated. “If there were some, I would do it just to take a little of the pressure off,” Trump told reporters. He also emphasised that the United States has significant energy resources. According to him, global oil supply conditions could stabilise relatively quickly.

The remarks follow Bessent’s earlier claim that Washington had effectively given India “permission” to continue purchasing Russian crude oil. The statement drew attention internationally because the United States and its allies have imposed sanctions on Russian energy exports. However, the temporary arrangement was described as a measure aimed at preventing supply disruptions in global markets. The policy reflects the complex balancing act between sanctions and maintaining energy stability.

The issue has become more sensitive as geopolitical tensions rise in the Middle East. Ongoing regional conflict has disrupted supply chains and raised fears of further volatility in global oil prices. In such circumstances, energy-importing countries like India face the challenge of securing reliable supplies. The temporary flexibility in sanctions is seen by some analysts as a practical response to market realities.

India has significantly increased imports of discounted Russian crude since the start of the Russia–Ukraine War. Indian officials have repeatedly stated that energy security and economic stability remain their top priorities. The country has maintained that its oil purchasing decisions are driven primarily by national interest and market conditions. This approach has sometimes drawn criticism from Western nations.

The latest comments from Trump highlight the broader debate surrounding global energy security and geopolitical strategy. While sanctions remain a key tool in international diplomacy, the realities of global energy demand often require flexible policies. As tensions continue in multiple regions, governments are closely monitoring supply chains and price movements. The situation is likely to remain a major focus of international economic discussions in the coming months.
