Dialogue And Diplomacy Over Conflict: PM Modi’s Message During Meeting With Putin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, with the two leaders reviewing bilateral cooperation and discussing key regional and global developments. During the meeting, Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy remained the way forward in resolving ongoing conflicts and said India was ready to assist in peace efforts.

The leaders exchanged perspectives on regional and global issues of mutual interest, including conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region. The Ministry of External Affairs said these conflicts have affected maritime trade as well as the safety and security of Indian seafarers. Modi reiterated India's willingness to contribute to efforts aimed at promoting peace and resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.

The meeting was the second between Modi and Putin this year, after they met on the margins of the 26th SCO Summit in Bishkek on August 31. The two leaders reviewed progress in India-Russia cooperation across several areas, including political, economic, defence, energy, space, skill mobility and people-to-people ties. They also discussed India-Russia engagement in the multilateral sphere, particularly within BRICS under India's 2026 chairship.

Modi and Putin welcomed the first edition of Russia's International Industrial Exhibition, INNOPROM India, which was held in India from September 9 to 11. The two leaders also visited the exhibition and interacted with participants. According to the MEA, they underlined the importance of the event in further expanding trade and industrial ties between India and Russia.

Both leaders agreed to remain engaged in strengthening the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between the two countries, which the MEA said continues to register significant growth despite geopolitical uncertainties. Putin also invited Modi to visit Russia for the 24th India-Russia Annual Summit. Modi accepted the invitation, while the dates will be decided through diplomatic channels based on mutual convenience.

At the beginning of the meeting, Modi presented Putin with a Russian translation of the Thirukkural, the classical work associated with Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar. The two leaders had earlier met in Delhi for the 23rd Annual Summit in December 2025. Their August meeting in Bishkek had also included discussions on the outcome of the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic and Cultural matters held in Moscow on August 24.
