India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has announced a temporary relaxation of Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms for long‑haul flights to offer relief to airlines grappling with operational pressures. The move is aimed at ensuring adequate pilot availability and smoother airline operations amid ongoing industry challenges.
Under the interim change, the DGCA has eased certain pilot duty time limits that dictate how long pilots can be on duty and fly on extended long‑haul sectors. These relaxations are designed to give airlines flexibility in scheduling crew for longer flights — particularly as carriers adjust routings to account for altered airspace use in parts of the Middle East. The relief measures will remain in effect through the end of April, aviation officials confirmed.
The regulator’s move comes against the backdrop of changes in global flight plans as airlines, including Indian carriers, face extended flight durations due to avoidance of certain West Asian airspace. These longer sectors stretch typical duty periods for flight crew, prompting the DGCA to provide temporary flexibility in FDTL norms rather than risk operational delays or cancellations.

The DGCA has emphasised that these relaxations are time‑bound and subject to reassessment as conditions evolve. Carriers are expected to continue monitoring pilot duty schedules closely to ensure compliance with prevailing safety standards even as temporary exemptions remain in place.
