Delhi High Court Seeks Asset Disclosure in Sunjay Kapur Estate Dispute

Karisma Kapoor’s kids battle stepmother over ₹30,000 crore inheritance.

The Delhi High Court witnessed intense drama on September 9 as Samaira, 20, and Kiaan, 15, children of Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor and late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, challenged a will allegedly granting Kapur’s ₹30,000 crore estate to his third wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur. The legal battle, unfolding three months after Kapur’s sudden death on June 12, 2025, from a heart attack during a polo match in the UK, also drew in Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, as a respondent.

Represented by senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, Samaira and Kiaan, with Karisma as their legal guardian, accused Priya of forging a will dated March 21, 2025, which purportedly bequeaths Kapur’s entire personal estate to her. The siblings claimed Priya concealed the will’s existence for over seven weeks, only revealing it in July, and argued it is “fabricated” and invalid. They seek a partition of the estate, a detailed asset disclosure, and an injunction against Priya’s control.

Priya’s legal team, led by senior advocates Rajiv Nayar and Shyel Trehan, countered that the suit is baseless, asserting Samaira and Kiaan received substantial assets from the Rani Kapur Trust, which holds shares in Sona Comstar. Priya’s counsel highlighted Karisma’s “acrimonious” 2016 divorce from Sunjay, stating, “I am a widow... his last lawfully wedded wife,” and urged sympathy for her and her 6-year-old son. They argued the unregistered will’s validity and dismissed claims of exclusion.

Rani Kapur, 80, also contested the will, lamenting, “My son leaves me with not a roof on my head?... There is something incredibly unholy.” She claimed her requests for transparency were ignored, alleging her emails were compromised. Justice Jyoti Singh issued a notice to Priya, ordering her to submit a comprehensive list of Sunjay’s movable and immovable assets as of June 12, 2025, and scheduled the next hearing for October 9.

The case, spotlighting one of India’s largest inheritance disputes, underscores tensions over Kapur’s vast fortune, with the court’s ruling poised to reshape the family’s legacy.
