Delhi High Court Hears Update on Sunjay Kapur Family Trust Dispute
Sunjay Kapur family trust dispute may be settled through mediation.
The long-running legal dispute over late businessman Sunjay Kapur’s family trust could be resolved through mediation by August, lawyers representing the family members told the Delhi High Court on Monday. The submissions raised hopes of an out-of-court settlement in the dispute surrounding the RK Family Trust.
The matter came before Justice Tushar Rao Gedela while the court was hearing an application filed on behalf of actor Karisma Kapoor’s children. They sought additional time to file their written statement in a civil suit filed by Rani Kapur against Priya Kapur and requested that the period during the ongoing mediation proceedings be excluded from the statutory deadline.
Senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, appearing for Rani Kapur, told the court that he did not oppose the application because the parties had reached an advanced stage of mediation. He said the matter could be settled by August and added that if an agreement was reached, nothing would remain for the court to decide in the dispute.

Senior advocate Shyel Trehan, representing Priya Kapur, also expressed optimism about the mediation process and told the court that she hoped there would soon be good news. Justice Gedela responded positively and noted that the parties had a very good mediator handling the discussions aimed at finding a resolution.
Trehan credited former Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud, who is serving as the mediator, and said he was working hard to find a conclusion to the dispute. Advocate Shantanu Agarwal, representing Karisma Kapoor’s children, sought exclusion of the period beginning May 29, when the deadline for filing their written statement expired, until the present date.
As a precautionary measure, the Delhi High Court allowed the written submissions to be filed in a sealed cover. The court clarified that while the statement could be submitted, its acceptance and formal placement on record would depend on the outcome of the pending application. The proceedings indicated that mediation had made significant progress, with the parties hopeful of reaching an amicable settlement by August.
