DDA Workshop Highlights Best Practices For Yamuna River Restoration
DDA workshop explores strategies for restoring Delhi’s Yamuna river.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) organised its first Stakeholder Consultation Workshop as part of the upcoming Yamuna Dialogues, bringing together experts and institutions to discuss sustainable strategies for the restoration of the Yamuna river and its floodplains. The initiative aims to develop a long-term roadmap based on scientific approaches, environmental conservation and global best practices.
The workshop, held in line with the directions of Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu, brought together government representatives, policymakers, environmental experts, scientists, urban planners, landscape architects and technical institutions. Discussions focused on practical measures for improving the river corridor while balancing ecological needs with urban development requirements.
The consultation covered two major themes — floodplain-responsive planning and ghat development. Experts discussed the need to design public infrastructure that works with the river’s natural flood patterns rather than obstructing them. The discussions also examined environmentally sustainable designs for ghats that can support ecological, cultural, recreational and religious activities along the river.

The workshop followed preliminary visits by the Lieutenant Governor to the Yamuna floodplains and review meetings with senior DDA officials. Sandhu, who is also the Chairperson of the DDA, stressed that the restoration of the Yamuna should involve citizens, experts and stakeholders as active participants rather than remain limited to government efforts. He highlighted the importance of considering how people currently use the floodplains while planning future restoration measures.
The Yamuna Dialogues have been designed as a collaborative platform to explore nature-based solutions, innovative financing models and climate-resilient approaches for managing the floodplains. The initiative aims to encourage knowledge sharing and develop solutions suited to the ecological and urban challenges of Delhi’s river environment.
The dialogue series is expected to conclude with two major sessions planned for September 2026 and January 2027. These meetings will focus on finalising the Delhi Yamuna Compact, a proposed roadmap outlining restoration priorities, implementation strategies and timelines for improving the Yamuna river corridor through coordinated action.
