#JUSTIN: DarkSword Spyware Is Actively Compromising iPhones Across Multiple Countries

DarkSword malware steals sensitive data by embedding itself in legitimate compromised websites.

Millions of users of Apple iPhones could be at risk of hacking following the discovery of a sophisticated spyware tool named "Darksword", according to a joint report by researchers from Google and cybersecurity firms iVerify and Lookout. The malware, described as highly advanced, is capable of infiltrating devices and extracting sensitive user data, raising fresh concerns about mobile security on a global scale.

The report highlights that Darksword operates by infecting legitimate websites, turning them into delivery channels for the spyware. Once users visit these compromised platforms, their iPhones can be targeted without their knowledge, enabling attackers to access personal information. Researchers noted that the scale and technical sophistication of the malware make it particularly dangerous, potentially exposing hundreds of millions of users worldwide.

According to the findings, the spyware has been deployed in targeted campaigns across multiple countries, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Malaysia, and Ukraine. In some instances, attackers embedded the malware into components of legitimate Ukrainian websites, including news portals and even a government agency platform. This method allowed them to silently harvest data from unsuspecting visitors accessing these sites through their mobile devices.

Security experts have also raised concerns about the actors behind the spyware. Google indicated that the tool has been linked to multiple commercial surveillance vendors as well as suspected state-backed hacking groups. This suggests that the spyware may be part of a broader ecosystem where advanced cyber tools are developed and distributed beyond their original intended use, increasing risks for both individuals and institutions.

Justin Albrecht, a principal researcher at Lookout, warned that there is now a confirmed pipeline through which recent exploits are reaching potentially criminal entities with financial motives. His remarks underline the growing convergence between sophisticated cyber-espionage tools and financially driven cybercrime, a trend that experts say is becoming increasingly difficult to contain.

The discovery of Darksword underscores the evolving nature of cyber threats and the need for heightened vigilance among users and organisations alike. While companies like Apple regularly update their security systems, the emergence of such advanced spyware highlights persistent vulnerabilities in the digital ecosystem. Experts advise users to keep their devices updated, avoid suspicious links, and remain cautious while browsing, as investigations into the malware’s full scope and impact continue.
