Cyprus President meets PM Modi, shares selfie in Delhi talks.

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides shared a light-hearted moment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday as both leaders met in the national capital, briefly pausing for a selfie ahead of their official bilateral talks aimed at strengthening India–Cyprus relations. The informal gesture came before formal discussions at Hyderabad House, highlighting the cordial tone of the high-level diplomatic engagement.

The two leaders exchanged warm greetings upon arrival, with President Christodoulides later taking a selfie with Prime Minister Modi using his mobile phone. Such informal exchanges have become increasingly visible during visits by global leaders to India, reflecting a blend of traditional diplomacy with modern, media-friendly interactions. Previous visiting dignitaries, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have also shared similar moments with PM Modi during official meetings.

Earlier in the day, President Christodoulides paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, underscoring the symbolic importance of India’s historical legacy in shaping international goodwill. The visit is seen as part of efforts to deepen diplomatic, economic, and strategic cooperation between India and Cyprus. Officials noted that such gestures reinforce cultural understanding alongside formal state-level negotiations.

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met the visiting President and welcomed his positive outlook on strengthening bilateral relations and India–European Union cooperation. In a post on social media platform X, Jaishankar highlighted discussions on expanding partnership areas and expressed optimism about further progress during Christodoulides’ meeting with PM Modi. These engagements reflect ongoing efforts to broaden India’s diplomatic outreach within Europe.

The Cyprus President arrived in New Delhi on Thursday after a prior visit to Mumbai, where he participated in financial and institutional engagements, including a symbolic event at the National Stock Exchange. He was received at the airport with ceremonial honours by Minister of State Ajay Tamta. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit builds on momentum generated by Prime Minister Modi’s earlier trip to Cyprus and signals a continued push to enhance bilateral cooperation across trade, investment, and strategic sectors.

President Christodoulides is also scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu, who will host an official banquet in his honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Officials said the visit reflects growing convergence between the two countries on global and regional issues, with both sides aiming to expand economic ties, strengthen political dialogue, and deepen cooperation within broader India–EU relations.
