CM Rekha Gupta Leads Delhi’s Push for Fuel Conservation and Public Transport
Delhi CM urges fuel conservation, public transport following PM Modi appeal.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday said the Delhi government is working with “full commitment” to promote fuel conservation and public transport in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal for energy saving and reduced dependence on imported resources amid ongoing global uncertainties and the West Asia conflict.
In a post on social media platform X, Gupta said energy conservation was directly linked to national interest and called on citizens to participate in a broader movement aimed at reducing fuel consumption. Referring to the Prime Minister’s message, she said the Delhi government had decided to limit the use of official vehicles for departmental operations and encourage greater use of public transport and carpooling among government officials and elected representatives.
The Chief Minister stated that she, her Cabinet colleagues, Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs, Delhi government officers, and various departments would use the minimum number of vehicles required for official work. She added that carpooling and public transportation would be prioritised as part of the initiative. Gupta also appealed to Delhi residents to support the campaign by adopting fuel-saving practices in their daily lives.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made the appeal during an address in Vadodara on Monday, where he urged citizens to adopt more self-reliant consumption habits and exercise financial discipline. Stressing the importance of reducing dependence on imports, Modi encouraged people to support domestic products under the “Vocal for Local” initiative, saying excessive reliance on foreign goods puts pressure on India’s foreign exchange reserves.
The Prime Minister also called for restraint in non-essential spending, particularly on gold imports, which he said consume significant national resources. He further urged moderation in edible oil consumption, citing both economic and health concerns, and reiterated the need to reduce petrol and diesel usage by opting for public transport, electric vehicles, and shared mobility solutions. Modi suggested that households with multiple vehicles should consider carpooling to reduce fuel consumption.
In addition, Modi encouraged citizens to choose Indian destinations for weddings and holidays instead of overseas travel, arguing that domestic tourism would help retain foreign exchange within the country. Referring to the Statue of Unity as an example of a world-class destination, he also urged farmers to adopt natural farming methods and reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers, emphasising the importance of sustainability and soil protection for long-term agricultural health.
