China Still Dominates BRICS Growth Despite India's Faster Pace

China still dominates BRICS income growth, though India grew faster.

China continues to account for the largest share of economic growth within the BRICS grouping, although India has expanded at a faster pace than China over the past five years, according to an analysis by economist Surjit Bhalla. The findings highlight China’s overwhelming contribution to the bloc’s overall rise in global economic influence, while also showing India’s improving relative growth performance.

Bhalla’s calculations indicate that BRICS’ share of global income increased from 21.9 per cent in 2011 to 28.9 per cent in 2025. However, the figures present a different picture when China is excluded from the grouping. The combined share of the remaining 10 BRICS members declined from 11.9 per cent to 11.5 per cent during the same period.

According to the analysis, China alone contributed 72 per cent of the increase in BRICS’ total income between 2011 and 2025. This suggests that the bloc’s growing share of the global economy has been driven predominantly by the scale and expansion of the Chinese economy rather than by uniform growth among all its members.

India’s performance, however, has been comparatively stronger in the more recent period. The country has grown somewhat faster than China over the past five years, indicating a shift in relative growth momentum between the two major Asian economies. Despite this, India’s faster expansion has not been sufficient to significantly narrow the substantial economic gap separating it from China.

The analysis therefore draws a distinction between growth rates and overall economic size. While India may be expanding at a quicker pace in recent years, China’s much larger economic base means that even moderate growth continues to add considerably more to BRICS’ total income than growth from most other member countries.

The findings underline China’s continuing dominance within BRICS while pointing to India’s increasing economic significance. India’s faster recent growth could gradually improve its position within the grouping, but the data shows that China remains the principal force behind BRICS’ larger share of the global economy.
