Chennai Faces Heavy Rain, High Humidity Amid Poor Air Quality Alerts

Chennai faces heavy rainfall, high humidity, and polluted air today.

Chennai is bracing for a deluge as heavy rainfall and high humidity levels dominate the forecast. With temperatures ranging from 25.1°C to 28.9°C and an 80% humidity level, the city is set for a challenging Monday. A 96% chance of precipitation signals continuous downpours, while the air quality, marked by a concerning AQI of 131 recorded yesterday, urges residents to take precautions. The combination of wet conditions and poor air quality demands careful planning for daily activities.

The day begins with overcast skies, with temperatures gradually rising to 28.9°C by afternoon. Gentle winds at 16.6 km/h and visibility of 9.5 km will accompany the persistent rain, creating slippery roads and potential waterlogging. Yesterday’s air quality data revealed PM2.5 levels at 60 µg/m³, PM10 at 99 µg/m³, and CO at 529 µg/m³, contributing to an AQI of 131 (Indian standard) and 136 (US standard). These elevated pollution levels, particularly in high-traffic zones, necessitate masks for outdoor exposure, while waterproof gear is essential for navigating the city’s drenched streets.

Residents are advised to prioritize indoor activities and limit outdoor travel to essential trips. Commuters should account for delays due to reduced visibility and waterlogged roads, especially in low-lying areas prone to flooding. The India Meteorological Department and AQI.in data underscore the need for vigilance, as the heavy rainfall is expected to disrupt daily routines across Chennai.

Looking ahead, the week promises more wet weather. October 21 will bring moderate rain with temperatures reaching 30.7°C, while October 22 will see another bout of heavy rainfall. The peak of the week’s precipitation is forecast for October 23, with 28.11 mm of rain expected. Conditions may ease slightly on October 24 and 25, but high humidity will persist, making breathable clothing a necessity. By October 26, partly cloudy skies may offer a brief respite, though residents should remain prepared for variable weather.

Despite the rainfall’s potential to temporarily clear pollutants, Chennai’s air quality remains a concern, with yesterday’s AQI marking a monthly high. High humidity, coupled with ongoing pollution in urban areas, will create uncomfortable conditions for outdoor activities. Residents are encouraged to monitor real-time weather and air quality updates from sources like AQI.in and plan accordingly to stay safe and comfortable during this wet spell.
