Chamath Palihapitiya Warns: Zuckerberg's Exit Crushes California's Billionaire Wealth Tax Base

Chamath Palihapitiya claims Zuckerberg's Florida move reduces California's billionaire taxable wealth below $1 trillion.

Venture Capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya has raised concerns over the potential fiscal implications for California following reports that Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg may be relocating to Florida. According to reports, Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have purchased a mansion in Indian Creek, an exclusive enclave in South Florida known for housing some of the world’s wealthiest individuals.

Indian Creek, often referred to as the “Billionaire Bunker”, comprises roughly 41 luxury homes and counts prominent figures such as Jeff Bezos, Tom Brady, Carl Icahn, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner among its residents. While neither Zuckerberg nor Meta has publicly confirmed a permanent relocation, reports of the property purchase have fuelled speculation about a potential change in primary residence.

Palihapitiya, in a post on social media platform X, highlighted what he described as the possible financial consequences for California if Zuckerberg were to formally shift his tax residency. “With Zuck’s move to Florida, California’s total taxable wealth from billionaires has plummeted to well under $1T from over $2T just a few weeks ago,” he wrote, suggesting a sharp contraction in the state’s billionaire tax base.

The remarks come amid ongoing discussions in California about wealth-based taxation proposals aimed at addressing budgetary pressures and funding public services. High-net-worth individuals relocating to states such as Florida—which does not levy a state income tax—has been a recurring point of debate in policy circles, particularly as states compete to retain affluent residents.

Zuckerberg’s potential move, if confirmed, would add to a broader trend of business leaders and entrepreneurs exploring residence changes for financial or lifestyle reasons. However, tax residency status depends on several legal and administrative factors, and no official statement has been made regarding any change in Zuckerberg’s primary state of residence.
