CBI Probes Alleged 'Fictitious Debtors' and Fund Diversion in 8-Hour Grill of Anil Ambani

The CBI questioned Anil Ambani over alleged Reliance Communications fraud involving multiple public sector banks.

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday questioned industrialist Anil Ambani for nearly eight hours in connection with an alleged bank fraud case involving ₹2,929.05 crore linked to Reliance Communications. Officials said Ambani appeared before the investigating officer at the agency’s headquarters in Delhi and was later asked to join the probe again for further questioning.

According to investigators, the case was registered on August 21, 2025, following a complaint filed by the State Bank of India. The allegations pertain to financial irregularities and suspected diversion of funds involving loans extended to Reliance Communications, which has been under scrutiny for its financial dealings.

The probe has widened over time, with the agency also registering additional cases based on complaints from the Bank of Baroda and Punjab National Bank earlier this year. These cases involve the company and its directors, indicating a broader investigation into multiple transactions and loan accounts.

Officials said the questioning focused on understanding Ambani’s role in the financial decisions and transactions under investigation. The extended duration of the interrogation reflects the complexity of the case and the volume of financial records being examined by the agency.

Ambani has been directed to appear again before the CBI as part of the ongoing inquiry. The agency is expected to continue gathering evidence, including documents and statements, to establish the sequence of events and determine accountability in the alleged fraud.

The case adds to a series of high-profile investigations into corporate loan defaults and banking irregularities in India. Authorities have been tightening oversight and enforcement in recent years to address concerns related to non-performing assets and financial misconduct in the banking sector.
