Businesses Spend Up To $4 Million To Reroute Cargo Via Panama Canal Amid Hormuz Tensions

Businesses reroute trade via Panama Canal amid Hormuz tensions

Businesses are paying up to $4 million to secure last-minute passage through the Panama Canal as the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz disrupts global trade routes. The Panama Canal Authority reports this surge in auction bids for priority slots, driven by rerouted energy shipments avoiding the Middle East chokepoint. Normally, transit fees range from $300,000 to $400,000 per vessel, with prior premiums at $250,000-$300,000; recent averages hit $425,000 amid the crisis.

The Strait of Hormuz, vital for 20% of global oil, has been effectively closed since late February 2026 following escalated U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, forcing tankers and LNG carriers to seek alternatives. An LNG vessel recently bid $4 million to skip a five-day wait, while two oil tankers exceeded $3 million each in extra fees. Canal administrator Ricaurte Vásquez noted these costs stem from urgent rerouting, not congestion at the waterway.

Auction system allows unreserved ships to buy slots from highest bidder, accelerating vital cargo amid soaring oil prices. This shift has created seismic changes in supply chains, with companies prioritizing speed over cost. The canal, handling 6% of world maritime trade, sees heightened demand from Asia-Europe and U.S. routes bypassing Hormuz.

Such premiums highlight vulnerabilities in global logistics during geopolitical tensions. Firms face tough choices as delays compound fuel and delivery costs. Vásquez emphasized temporary nature, borne by urgent operators. The blockade continues to ripple through energy markets worldwide. Panama Canal's role amplifies as ships pivot from treacherous Middle East paths. Experts warn prolonged Hormuz issues could sustain elevated fees, pressuring inflation and trade. Authorities monitor auctions closely while trade adapts to this new reality.
