BSNL Makes an Unexpected Comeback While Jio Tops Subscriber Growth: TRAI

Jio leads August growth with 35 lakh new users; BSNL sees surprise subscriber gain, says TRAI.

Reliance Jio dominated India's telecom landscape in August by adding the highest number of wireless subscribers, while state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) notched a surprising rebound with significant gains, according to the latest Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data. The sector as a whole expanded by 35.19 lakh new wireless users, pushing the total mobile subscriber base to 1,167.03 million.

This growth underscores the competitive dynamics in a market increasingly driven by private giants Jio and Bharti Airtel, even as Vodafone Idea grapples with persistent losses amid financial pressures. Broadband subscribers, meanwhile, reached 989.58 million, reflecting sustained demand for high-speed internet services.

Jio, the market leader with a commanding 41.08% share, bolstered its position by onboarding 19.49 lakh new mobile customers, continuing its streak of outpacing rivals in user acquisition. Bharti Airtel followed closely, gaining 4.96 lakh wireless subscribers and solidifying its 22.72% market share, while also expanding its wired broadband base by 1.08 lakh connections.

In a notable turnaround, BSNL added 13.85 lakh users, bucking its recent trend of declines and offering a glimmer of hope for public sector telecoms, which now hold less than 8% of the overall mobile market. Conversely, Vodafone Idea shed 3.09 lakh subscribers, extending its negative trajectory and highlighting ongoing challenges from adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues and operational inefficiencies. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) also continued its subscriber erosion, though exact figures were not specified.

The demographic breakdown reveals a predominantly urban subscriber concentration, with 686.79 million users (56.09% of the total) in cities, compared to 537.75 million in rural areas (43.91%). Urban tele-density stood at 134.51%, far exceeding the rural figure of 59.31%, pointing to untapped potential in countryside connectivity. This urban-rural divide aligns with broader efforts under the Digital India initiative to bridge gaps through affordable data plans and infrastructure rollout. Jio's wireline segment, however, faced a setback with a loss of 15.51 lakh subscribers, possibly due to intensifying competition in fixed broadband.

The August figures signal a stabilising yet polarised telecom sector, where private operators fuel expansion amid 5G rollout and monetisation strategies, while legacy players like Vodafone Idea face consolidation pressures. BSNL's unexpected surge could stem from aggressive tariff hikes or promotional offers targeting cost-sensitive users, though sustained growth remains uncertain. Investors are closely monitoring these trends, as they influence stock performance and regulatory discussions on spectrum auctions and service quality.

TRAI's monthly reports continue to serve as a barometer for an industry pivotal to India's digital economy, with projections estimating further subscriber churn as 5G adoption accelerates.
