Boeing Optimistic About More Dreamliner Orders in Booming Indian Market

Boeing anticipates more 787 Dreamliner orders in India, highlighting robust demand despite short-term tariff challenges and past incidents.

Boeing remains highly optimistic about the future of its 787 Dreamliner in the Indian aviation market, expecting additional orders as the sector experiences rapid expansion. Speaking to PTI, Boeing India and South Asia President Salil Gupte described the B787’s prospects as “extremely bright,” noting its suitability for a growing network of long-haul and efficient routes.

Air India currently operates 33 Dreamliners, comprising 26 legacy B787-8s, six B787-9s inherited from Vistara, and one newly delivered aircraft set to enter commercial service from February 1, 2026. IndiGo also flies a few leased Dreamliners from Norse Atlantic Airways. Gupte emphasized the aircraft’s global popularity, with strong demand expected to persist despite Boeing delivering only 14 units worldwide last year amid various challenges.

Addressing recent hurdles, Gupte acknowledged a difficult 2025 for the company, including regulatory issues and the tragic crash of Air India flight AI171—an Ahmedabad-London Gatwick Dreamliner service on June 12, 2025, that killed 260 people. He expressed condolences for the victims and noted that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) continues its probe, with Boeing refraining from further comment pending the official report.

On competition from Airbus, Gupte viewed it as natural in the industry, insisting the Dreamliner’s unique capabilities make it ideal for many missions Indian carriers will pursue. Regarding US-India tariff tensions, he expressed confidence that Boeing—having navigated wars, crises, and other disruptions over its 100-year history—would overcome short-term obstacles, as long-term travel growth remains unstoppable.

Boeing maintains a strong presence in India with over 265 commercial and military aircraft in operation, more than 325 local suppliers, and annual sourcing exceeding USD 1.25 billion. Other Indian carriers like Air India Express, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet also operate Boeing aircraft.
