BJP’s Prem Kumar Elected Bihar Assembly Speaker Unopposed in Rare Show of Unity

In a smooth and unanimous proceedings on Tuesday, senior Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Prem Kumar was elected Speaker of the 18th Bihar Legislative Assembly, reinforcing the ruling NDA’s complete command over the House while showcasing an unusual moment of bipartisan camaraderie.

Pro-tem Speaker Narendra Narayan Yadav announced that only one nomination – in the name of Prem Kumar – had been received and found valid, leaving no requirement for a formal division. The House approved his election through a voice vote within minutes of the session commencing, underlining the pre-decided consensus among both the treasury and opposition benches.

Following tradition, the newly elected Speaker was escorted to the Chair by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav – a rare visual that briefly masked the intense political rivalry between the two leaders. The ceremonial walk symbolised continuity of constitutional decorum even as the state prepares for fierce battles ahead of the 2025 Assembly polls.

Prem Kumar, 68, brings decades of legislative experience to the post, having won the Gaya Town constituency for a record eighth consecutive term in the recent elections. Known for his calm demeanour and deep knowledge of parliamentary procedure, the veteran BJP leader has previously served as Agriculture and Urban Development Minister in multiple Nitish Kumar cabinets.

With Prem Kumar now presiding over the House, the NDA government is expected to push its legislative agenda without procedural hurdles, while the opposition RJD-led Mahagathbandhan will watch closely whether the new Speaker maintains the impartiality demanded of the high office amid an increasingly polarised political atmosphere in Bihar.
