BJP MLAs Walk Out of J&K Assembly Amid NC Protest on Kashmiri Safety

BJP MLA Maithili Thakur praises Bihar Governor's address and Union Budget, demands justice in NEET aspirant death.

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed scenes of chaos on Tuesday as legislators from both the ruling coalition and the opposition staged protests over multiple contentious issues. Proceedings were repeatedly disrupted as slogans were raised, walkouts were staged, and members expressed strong dissatisfaction with the government’s responses inside the House.

Two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs, Rajiv Jasrotia and Pawan Gupta, walked out of the Assembly, citing what they described as evasive and unsatisfactory replies from the Omar Abdullah-led government. Jasrotia initiated the walkout after questioning official responses to issues raised during the session, with Gupta joining him in solidarity soon after.

The BJP’s protest added to the charged atmosphere, with party legislators demanding clearer answers and concrete action on matters affecting their constituencies. The walkout underscored growing tensions between the opposition and the ruling dispensation over governance and accountability.

Meanwhile, ruling National Conference (NC) MLAs staged a dharna within the Assembly premises. Their protest focused on alleged attacks against Kashmiris outside the Union Territory and renewed demands for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

In a related development, Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference president and MLA Sajad Gani Lone submitted three amendments to the Lieutenant Governor’s address. The amendments raised concerns over the safety of Kashmiri students, traders, and hawkers outside the UT, highlighting what Lone termed a serious omission in the official address.

Lone also called for the regularisation of daily wage workers and age relaxation for civil service aspirants, both long-standing demands in the region. As the sole opposition MLA from Kashmir to move amendments to the L-G’s address, his intervention added further political weight to an already turbulent Assembly session.
