BJD MP Sasmit Patra Criticises AM/NS Shift From Odisha To Andhra Pradesh
BJD MP criticises AM/NS shift, raising concerns over Odisha investments.
Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Sasmit Patra has termed the reported shift of AM/NS operations from Odisha to Andhra Pradesh as “sad and shameful,” criticising the development as a setback for the state’s industrial growth. Reacting to the move, Patra said the relocation raises serious concerns about the business environment and policy support available to industries in Odisha. He argued that such decisions could impact investor confidence and employment opportunities, particularly in regions that rely heavily on large-scale industrial projects for economic activity.
The AM/NS India project, a major steel venture involving global players, has been a significant component of Odisha’s industrial landscape. Any shift in operations or investment focus, experts say, could have implications for ancillary industries, supply chains, and local employment, especially in areas where industrialisation plays a key role in livelihoods.
Patra further questioned the circumstances that led to the relocation, urging the state government to provide clarity and take corrective measures to prevent similar developments in the future. He emphasised the need for proactive engagement with investors and policy stability to retain large projects.

Industry observers note that interstate competition for investments has intensified in recent years, with states offering incentives, infrastructure support, and regulatory ease to attract major companies. Andhra Pradesh, in particular, has been positioning itself as a preferred destination for manufacturing and heavy industries.
The issue has also sparked political debate, with opposition leaders highlighting it as an example of missed opportunities and governance challenges. However, state authorities have yet to issue a detailed response addressing the concerns raised by the BJD MP. Analysts suggest that the situation underscores the importance of maintaining a conducive industrial ecosystem, including efficient clearances, land availability, and investor-friendly policies. The long-term impact of the reported shift will depend on how both states respond and whether further investments follow similar patterns.
