Bargarh Case: Odisha Teen Dies After Self-Immolation
Fourth burn death of a young woman in one month.
The tragic incident in Odisha’s Bargarh district has claimed the life of a 13-year-old schoolgirl, who allegedly set herself on fire under mysterious circumstances this morning. The minor, rescued in a half-burnt state from a football ground in Phiringmal village within Gaisilat police station limits, succumbed to her injuries at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla.
Bolangir SP Abilash G, currently in charge of Bargarh district, confirmed her death and said police have launched a detailed investigation to uncover the reasons behind the extreme act. An unnatural death case has been registered based on her family’s complaint, and a three-member team has been formed to probe the matter.
According to police, the girl had been staying in a hostel but was visiting her maternal uncle’s house at the time of the incident. Officials also revealed that a video related to the case has been recovered, which may shed light on her final moments. Northern Range IG Himanshu Lal stated that investigators are examining all possible angles, including personal and social factors, that could have led to the tragedy.
The death comes amid a disturbing trend of similar burn-related fatalities among young women in Odisha. Since July 12, three other women have died in separate incidents involving fire. These include a 20-year-old college student in Balasore, a minor girl in Balanga who was allegedly set ablaze by three men, and a third-year undergraduate student in Kendrapara whose charred body was discovered in her home.
The latest case has sparked renewed concerns over the safety and mental well-being of young girls in the state, with police facing increasing pressure to deliver swift answers and justice.
