Bajaj Auto Bets On Electric Bikes For International Markets By FY28

Bajaj Auto plans global electric bike launch under EV expansion strategy.

Bajaj Auto is preparing to expand its electric vehicle portfolio with the development of an electric motorcycle targeted for international markets before its potential introduction in India. The company plans to launch the new electric bike in fiscal year 2028 as part of its broader strategy to strengthen its global presence in the electric mobility sector.

Bajaj Auto Chief Financial Officer Dinesh Thapar said the company is currently prioritising overseas markets for the upcoming electric motorcycle. The move reflects the company’s approach of building scale and experience in global markets before bringing the product to Indian consumers.

The company has also reported improving financial performance from its electric vehicle business. Thapar said Bajaj Auto’s electric division has achieved double-digit Ebitda margins, while its electric scooter business has become Ebitda-positive. The company believes the improving profitability reflects stronger demand and operational efficiency as its EV operations expand.

Bajaj Auto’s Chetak electric scooter recorded a landmark quarter, achieving its highest-ever sales and delivery numbers. The company delivered more than 1.5 lakh electric vehicles during the quarter across electric two-wheelers and electric three-wheelers, recording double-digit growth in volumes. The company is also increasing Chetak production capacity from 50,000 units per month to 60,000 units in the coming months to meet rising demand.

Thapar said demand for the Chetak electric scooter has exceeded supply, leading the company to accelerate production expansion. Bajaj Auto also maintained that it remains the market leader in India’s electric three-wheeler segment and expects to further increase its market share during the third and fourth quarters of the financial year.

To support growing demand across its electric and conventional vehicle portfolio, Bajaj Auto plans to increase its overall manufacturing capacity by 20% during the current financial year. The company will add 10% capacity within the next three to four months and another 10% expansion by the end of the fiscal year, strengthening its position in the rapidly growing electric mobility market.
