Assam Semiconductor Plant In Jagiroad Likely To Start Production This Fiscal: Vaishnaw

Jagiroad semiconductor plant in Assam likely to start production this fiscal.

The semiconductor manufacturing plant at Jagiroad in Assam is expected to begin production within the current financial year, marking a significant step in India’s push toward self-reliance in chip manufacturing. Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, confirmed the timeline after a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The project is being closely monitored as part of India’s broader semiconductor development strategy.

According to officials, the progress of the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) facility was reviewed during the meeting held in the state capital. The minister stated that preparations are on track for production to begin as planned. The initiative is also being supported through training programs under the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), which aims to build a skilled workforce for semiconductor manufacturing technologies.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the interaction as productive and noted that discussions also covered infrastructure development in Assam. This includes ongoing railway expansion projects and the development of Amrit Bharat stations across the state. The semiconductor plant is being seen as a key industrial milestone that aligns with Assam’s long-term economic development goals.

The Jagiroad facility involves an investment of around Rs 27,000 crore and is expected to become one of India’s most advanced semiconductor assembly and testing hubs. It will use modern technologies such as flip-chip packaging and Integrated System in Package (ISIP), designed to meet global manufacturing standards. Once operational, the plant is expected to significantly enhance India’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain.

The facility is designed to serve multiple high-demand sectors including automotive, electric vehicles, telecommunications, and consumer electronics. With a projected output of up to 48 million chips per day, it is expected to cater to both domestic and international markets. The project is also estimated to generate around 15,000 direct jobs and up to 13,000 indirect employment opportunities, boosting the regional economy.

Beyond its industrial significance, the Jagiroad semiconductor plant represents a major socio-economic development for Assam and surrounding regions. It is expected to strengthen India’s technological ecosystem while reducing dependency on imports in critical electronics manufacturing. Officials say the project will play a key role in positioning India as a competitive player in the global semiconductor industry.
