Assam Police Seize Narcotics Worth ₹5 Crore
Four arrested with heroin, yaba tablets in Sribhumi.
In a significant blow to drug trafficking, Assam Police arrested four individuals and seized narcotics worth over Rs 5 crore in Sribhumi district on Wednesday night. The operation, conducted in the Puwamara area, led to the recovery of 650 grams of heroin and 10,000 yaba tablets, a potent methamphetamine-based stimulant, authorities confirmed.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the breakthrough on X, stating, “Sribhumi Police seized 650 grams of heroin and 10,000 yaba tablets worth Rs 5 crore at Puwamara, arresting four drug peddlers. Assam Police remains resolute in its fight against drugs.” The operation underscores the state’s ongoing #AssamAgainstDrugs campaign, aimed at curbing the illegal drug trade.
Yaba, known as “crazy medicine” in Thai, is a highly addictive stimulant historically used to boost soldiers’ performance during World War II. According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, it has gained popularity among youth in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar. Its presence in Assam raises concerns about the spread of synthetic drugs in the region.

The arrested individuals, whose identities remain undisclosed, are under interrogation as police investigate the drug trafficking network. Authorities suspect the consignment was part of a larger smuggling operation, prompting heightened vigilance across the state. The seizure marks a critical step in Assam’s efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking, with officials vowing to intensify crackdowns to protect communities from the growing menace.
