Ashwini Vaishnaw Calls For Local Server Manufacturing At Vizag AI Data Centre Launch

Ashwini Vaishnaw urges Google to manufacture servers in India, strengthen AI ecosystem during Vizag data centre launch.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has urged Google to manufacture servers in India, improve energy efficiency, and optimise water usage as part of the country’s expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure push. He made the remarks during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, highlighting the government’s vision under the India AI Mission.

Vaishnaw said that Visakhapatnam could soon earn the nickname “AI Patnam,” drawing a parallel with Hyderabad’s Cyberabad, which became a major IT services hub. He noted that just as Cyberabad transformed Hyderabad’s technology landscape, the new AI data hub could redefine Visakhapatnam’s identity. He also praised Andhra Pradesh’s leadership for actively building large-scale digital infrastructure to support emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.

The Minister further emphasised India’s growing importance in the global technology supply chain. He said that in a world facing geopolitical uncertainty, countries are increasingly seeking trusted partners where intellectual property rights are protected and supply chains remain secure and verifiable. According to him, India is uniquely positioned to offer such a trusted and transparent ecosystem for global technology investments.

On the same occasion, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation for a major Google Artificial Intelligence data centre near Visakhapatnam. The project, valued at around $5 billion and part of a larger ₹1.35 lakh crore investment plan, was described by him as a historic milestone for both the state and the country. He said the facility would act as a powerful growth engine for India’s digital future.

Naidu highlighted that the project is expected to become one of Asia’s largest AI data centre facilities and a key driver of development in North Andhra. He said the initiative began in September 2025 and is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2028. He also expressed confidence that AI-powered services such as virtual doctors and assistants would soon become widely available to citizens.

According to officials, the data centre will have a capacity of 1 GW and will be developed across 600 acres in Tarluvada, Adavivaram, and Rambilli villages. It will provide large-scale AI cloud computing and advanced data storage infrastructure, forming part of a broader multi-gigawatt digital ecosystem planned for the state. The initiative is aimed at positioning Andhra Pradesh as a major global hub for artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.
