Ashok Leyland Electric Double-Decker Bus Returns to Delhi Roads With ₹500 Fares

Electric double-decker buses return to Delhi, with Ashok Leyland's CSR unit offering ₹500 tickets.

Electric double-decker buses are set to return to the streets of the national capital, with the Delhi Government preparing to relaunch the service after nearly four decades. According to officials, the renewed fleet will initially include at least one electric double-decker bus manufactured by Ashok Leyland and provided to the transport department under a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. The vehicle, which had previously been stationed at the Okhla depot, has now completed trial assessments and is ready for public operations.

The introduction of these buses marks a significant move in Delhi’s broader push toward sustainable and high-capacity public transport. Officials said the double-decker model offers improved passenger capacity without occupying additional road space, a key consideration in a city struggling with congestion. The fully electric vehicle is expected to reduce emissions and noise pollution, aligning with the government’s long-term transportation and environmental goals. The transport department aims to gradually expand the fleet once operational and passenger feedback is assessed.

Tickets for the electric double-decker bus service are expected to cost ₹500, positioning it as a premium public transit experience. While the fare is higher than standard bus services, the government believes there will be significant demand from tourists and daily commuters seeking a comfortable, air-conditioned travel option. Officials also indicated that the government may explore multiple routes for the service, including heritage circuits and high-footfall corridors, though final route plans have not yet been announced.

The return of double-decker buses holds nostalgic value for many Delhi residents, as the iconic red double-deckers were discontinued in 1997 due to maintenance challenges and safety concerns. The new electric versions, equipped with updated safety and structural features, are expected to offer a modern yet reminiscent commuting experience. The government is likely to announce the official launch date soon, signaling the beginning of a new era of elevated and eco-friendly travel in the capital.
