Ashneer Grover Questions Sridhar Vembu's NRI Return-to-India Appeal: 'Look at the Numbers'

Ashneer Grover criticises Sridhar Vembu's emotional plea to NRIs, citing data-driven arguments against the return-to-India narrative.

Entrepreneur Ashneer Grover has criticised Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu’s public appeal urging Indians in the United States to return home, sparking a fresh debate over talent migration and India’s economic opportunities. The exchange followed Vembu’s open letter to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), in which he said “Bharat Mata” needs their skills and experience to help strengthen the country’s technological future.

Vembu’s message was framed around the need to build India’s innovation ecosystem by encouraging highly skilled professionals abroad to contribute directly from within the country. His comments reflected a broader argument that India can accelerate growth by attracting experienced global talent back home, especially in technology, entrepreneurship, and advanced industries.

Responding on social media, Grover dismissed the emotional appeal and urged a more data-driven view of the issue. He reportedly said people should “look at the numbers", arguing that decisions around relocation depend on practical realities such as income levels, quality of life, business environment, and career opportunities. He also suggested that emotional messaging alone cannot override structural concerns faced by professionals considering a move back to India.

The public disagreement highlights a recurring national conversation around brain drain versus reverse migration. While many believe returning professionals can significantly boost India’s economy and innovation capacity, others argue that stronger systems, higher wages, and better infrastructure are necessary to make such moves sustainable. The exchange between two prominent business figures has again brought attention to how India can best attract and retain global talent.
