Arab-Islamic Bloc Backs Self-Defence, Calls For Immediate Ceasefire

Bloc asserts self-defence right, urges halt to escalating Iran conflict.

An Arab-Islamic bloc has invoked its collective right to self-defense following Iran's missile strikes on Qatar's Ras Laffan Industrial City, demanding an immediate halt to further attacks amid escalating regional tensions. Iran launched five ballistic missiles with Qatari defenses intercepting four while one struck the world's largest LNG facility, causing extensive damage and fires but no casualties. QatarEnergy suspended production at affected trains, triggering global gas price surges as the facility supplies 20% of India's LNG needs. Qatar condemned the "blatant aggression," expelling Iranian military attachés and alerting the UN Security Council.

The bloc—comprising Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Jordan, and others—issued a joint statement asserting Article 51 of the UN Charter, framing Iran's actions as unprovoked retaliation spilling beyond its US-Israel conflict. Leaders warned of coordinated responses if attacks persist, while urging de-escalation to protect Gulf energy infrastructure vital to global markets.

Qatar's neutral mediation role in regional talks made Ras Laffan an unlikely target, believed aimed at disrupting neutral LNG flows amid Hormuz closure. Previous strikes hit al-Udeid Air Base, with Qatari F-15s downing Iranian Su-24 bombers—their first air kills—signaling readiness to defend sovereignty.

This invocation risks broadening the Iran-US-Israel war into a multi-front conflict, threatening 30% of global oil and gas transit. Diplomatic channels remain active via Oman and Turkey, but analysts warn of retaliatory cycles as Gulf states balance defense with economic stability.

The crisis amplifies energy vulnerabilities for importers like India, forcing spot market reliance and production cuts. As the bloc mobilizes, international calls intensify for ceasefire talks, with fears mounting over cascading strikes on interconnected Gulf hubs.
