Anil Ambani to Cooperate Fully With CBI in SBI Loan Fraud Investigation

Anil Ambani to appear before CBI over alleged Rs 2,929 crore SBI loan fraud involving Reliance Communications.

Reliance Group Chairman Anil Ambani is scheduled to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Delhi on Thursday and Friday for questioning in connection with a loan fraud case filed by the State Bank of India (SBI), a spokesperson said. The case relates to alleged irregularities involving Ambani’s company, Reliance Communications Ltd (RCom).

The CBI registered a First Information Report (FIR) following SBI’s claim of a loss of ₹2,929 crore, citing alleged misappropriation by RCom and Ambani through transactions that violated the terms of loans extended by the bank. SBI had classified the accounts as fraudulent in June of last year, prompting CBI searches at RCom’s offices and Ambani’s residence.

The spokesperson noted that Ambani’s scheduled appearance reflects his commitment to fully cooperate with all investigative agencies. “He is extending his cooperation to ensure a thorough and transparent inquiry,” the statement said.

Earlier, Ambani had approached the Supreme Court in December after the Bombay High Court upheld SBI’s fraud classification. He contended that crucial documents forming the basis for the classification orders were initially withheld and only provided after a six-month delay.

Reliance Communications, once a major telecom operator, has been undergoing insolvency proceedings due to mounting debts and operational challenges. The case underscores the continuing legal and financial troubles faced by the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group.

Legal scrutiny of the group extends beyond RCom. Last week, Ambani’s son, Jai Anmol Ambani, was questioned by the CBI for two days regarding a separate ₹228 crore bank fraud case involving Reliance Home Finance Ltd (RHFL). The investigation, based on a complaint by Union Bank of India, alleges criminal conspiracy, cheating, and misconduct, implicating RHFL’s former CEO Ravindra Sudhalkar and other officials.
