Amit Shah Urges Widespread Use Of Technology To Fast-Track Justice Delivery

Amit Shah urges technology use for faster justice delivery.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday called for the wider adoption of technology across India’s criminal justice system, stressing that tools ranging from investigation to prosecution must be modernised to ensure faster and more effective delivery of justice to citizens. He made the remarks while addressing the inauguration of the All India Fingerprint Conference 2026, organised by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

Shah underlined the importance of strengthening forensic infrastructure in the country and urged states to make greater use of the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS). He said the platform has already assisted in solving several complex criminal cases but remains significantly underutilised despite its potential to transform policing outcomes.

According to the Home Minister, NAFIS is currently operating at only about 10 per cent of its capacity. He said its effectiveness depends heavily on the quality and scale of data being fed into the system, particularly fingerprints collected from crime scenes. Shah emphasised that the system must not only be used for identifying offenders but also for building strong evidentiary support that can help secure convictions in court.

He further stated that NAFIS functions optimally only when supported by a comprehensive and continuously updated forensic database. “It is a two-way system,” he said, explaining that while the platform is useful for identifying criminals, its success also depends on systematic data collection and integration from ground-level investigations. He added that scientific evidence has become a central pillar of India’s evolving criminal justice framework.

Shah also called on law enforcement agencies to improve the quality, integrity and security of forensic data collected from crime scenes. He said that robust and reliable scientific inputs can significantly enhance the efficiency of investigations and improve the credibility of judicial outcomes. The Home Minister stressed that technology-driven policing is essential for building a modern justice system capable of meeting current challenges.

Highlighting the role of the NCRB, Shah said the organisation has been instrumental in supporting the implementation of India’s three new criminal laws. He noted that the bureau provided crucial assistance to police stations across the country during the transition process. The Home Minister concluded that integrating advanced technology into every stage of criminal proceedings is key to ensuring swift and transparent justice delivery in the country.
