Alphabet Targets 20,000 New Jobs in Bengaluru With Massive Office Expansion

Alphabet plans major Bengaluru office expansion, eyeing up to 20,000 more employees in India.

Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, is planning a significant expansion of its operations in India, with potential leases on two additional office towers in Bangalore’s Alembic City. The tech giant has already leased one tower and holds options on two more, totaling 2.4 million square feet of office space in the Whitefield tech corridor, sources familiar with the plans said. The first tower is expected to welcome employees in the coming months, while the remaining towers are slated for completion next year.

If Alphabet exercises its full options, the new office space could accommodate up to 20,000 additional staff, more than doubling its current India workforce of around 14,000. The expansion aligns with broader trends of US tech companies hiring more talent overseas due to tighter visa restrictions and rising H-1B visa costs. Alphabet confirmed its leased tower but declined to comment on the potential use of the other two towers.

Bangalore has emerged as a key hub for AI and software development, attracting major tech players like OpenAI and Anthropic. Alphabet has already invested heavily in the city, opening its largest campus last year with amenities such as indoor mini-golf, pickleball courts, and cafeterias. The company is actively recruiting for hundreds of roles in AI, chip design, and machine learning, including positions in YouTube’s generative AI team.

The expansion reflects India’s growing importance as a global talent pool for US tech giants, especially in artificial intelligence. Tens of millions of new internet users in the country also present a strategic market for AI products, from chatbots to coding tools. The shift is part of a broader trend of multinational companies establishing global capability centers, with Nasscom projecting employment in these hubs will rise from 1.9 million today to 2.5 million by 2030.

Recent immigration policy changes in the US, including steep increases in H-1B visa fees, have further accelerated this trend. Companies like Alphabet are leveraging India as a strategic alternative to recruit highly skilled engineers who might otherwise have sought opportunities in the US. According to Xpheno Pvt., headcounts for US tech giants in India have risen 16% over the past year, marking the largest growth in three years.

Experts say this surge in hiring underscores India’s growing role in shaping AI development and deployment at scale. “US visa restrictions and the rise of India’s talent pool have prompted companies to rethink their workforce strategies,” said Kamal Karanth, co-founder of a Bangalore-based consultancy. Alphabet’s expansion is likely to reinforce India’s position as a global tech and AI hub.
