An Air India Delhi-New York flight narrowly avoided disaster on Thursday when one of its engines was damaged after sucking in a baggage container while taxiing at Delhi Airport. The incident occurred in dense fog conditions, though all passengers and crew remained safe, the airline confirmed.
Flight AI101, operating between Delhi and New York (JFK), had returned to Delhi shortly after takeoff due to the unexpected closure of Iranian airspace, which impacted the aircraft’s planned route. The engine damage was sustained upon landing while the aircraft maneuvered on the taxiway.
An Air India spokesperson stated, “The aircraft was safely positioned at the designated parking stand, ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew. The right engine sustained damage after encountering a foreign object during taxiing in dense fog.”

The Airbus A350 has been grounded for a thorough inspection and necessary repairs. Air India emphasized that safety remains the airline’s top priority and that the aircraft will only resume operations once it is fully cleared by technical teams.
