Air India Confirms Faulty Fuel Switch on AI132 Will Go to Boeing
The faulty fuel switch from the AI132 Dreamliner is to be replaced and sent to Boeing.
Air India has identified the affected component involved in the recent fuel switch incident on its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flight AI132 and said the part will be sent to the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for further investigation, airline sources told NDTV Profit on Tuesday. The development comes a day after the airline reported another fuel switch-related scare on the aircraft.
According to sources, the component in question on flight AI132 is the fuel switch. While the aircraft itself has not been flagged for any systemic issue, the airline has isolated the specific part that showed abnormal behaviour. Air India has also begun inspections of the fuel switches across its entire Dreamliner fleet as a precautionary measure, the sources added.
The airline clarified that the total operational life of the fuel switch component is 20,000 flight hours. However, the affected fuel switch on AI132 had logged only 3,440 hours, which is less than 20 per cent of its expected service life. Officials said this raised concerns and prompted immediate action under standard aviation safety protocols.

“The issue is with a specific component, not the aircraft,” an Air India source said, adding that the faulty fuel switch will be replaced on the aircraft. The removed component will then be sent to the OEM, Boeing, for detailed examination and analysis to determine the cause of the malfunction and to rule out any manufacturing or design-related issues.
Air India has not reported any injuries or major operational disruptions linked to the incident. The airline said it is following all prescribed safety procedures and working closely with the manufacturer to ensure continued airworthiness and passenger safety across its fleet.
