Air India Confirms CEO Campbell Wilson Signalled 2024 Resignation Intent

Air India CEO indicated resignation plans as early 2024.

Air India Ltd. has confirmed that Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson signalled his intention to resign as early as 2024 and has now formally stepped down from his position, the airline said in official and media statements on Tuesday. The announcement marks a significant leadership change at India’s largest carrier amid ongoing financial and operational headwinds.

Wilson’s departure, which was confirmed by Air India’s board earlier this week, follows months of discussions — reportedly beginning in 2024 — about his future at the Tata Group‑owned airline. Sources familiar with the matter told reporters that he communicated his desire to exit before the end of his five‑year contract, which was due to run through mid‑2027.

The veteran aviation executive, who took over the reins of Air India in 2022 after the Tata Group’s acquisition and consolidation of several carriers, presided over a major restructuring and transition phase for the airline. During his tenure, Air India worked to integrate operations, expand its global network and modernise its fleet following years of decline under previous ownership.

Industry analysts say Wilson’s exit underscores the wider challenges faced by Air India, including mounting financial losses, heightened regulatory scrutiny after safety incidents, and stiff competition in India’s aviation market. The carrier is navigating turbulent conditions as it seeks to stabilise operations and restore profitability in a sector hit by geopolitical tensions and supply‑chain pressures.

Air India clarified that Wilson will remain in his role during a transitional period while a successor is identified, ensuring continuity of leadership. The board has already begun succession planning, with industry observers expecting an announcement in the coming weeks as the airline aims for a smooth handover.

The development arrives at a pivotal moment for Indian aviation, with other carriers also undergoing leadership changes amid regulatory and market pressures. Stakeholders are watching how Air India’s next chief executive will address the airline’s structural challenges and long‑term turnaround goals.
