Air India Clarifies No Grounding Of Boeing 787-8 Fleet Amid Online Claims
Air India denies claims of grounding Boeing 787-8 aircraft.
Air India has rejected claims that 11 of its Boeing 787-8 aircraft have been grounded, describing the reports as “factually inaccurate” and misleading. The airline clarified that its wide-body fleet is fully operational, with aircraft undergoing routine maintenance, scheduled checks, and upgrade programmes as part of standard aviation practices.
In an official statement shared on social media platform X, the airline said that three of its 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft are currently undergoing cabin retrofitting under its ongoing fleet modernisation initiative. It added that four aircraft are undergoing scheduled heavy maintenance checks, which are part of mandatory safety and performance protocols.
The airline further stated that one aircraft is under routine line maintenance, while another is scheduled to return to India after completing operations abroad. According to Air India, only two aircraft are currently in active service, with the rest either undergoing planned maintenance or positioned for operational deployment.

Air India emphasised that planned maintenance and technical upgrades should not be confused with aircraft being grounded. It urged the public and media to rely on official communication channels for accurate information, particularly on technical matters related to fleet operations and aviation safety.
The clarification comes amid circulating reports suggesting that a significant portion of the airline’s Boeing 787 fleet had been taken out of service, raising concerns about operational capacity. The airline’s response aims to address speculation and reinforce that all aircraft are accounted for within scheduled operational and maintenance cycles.
The development highlights ongoing scrutiny of airline fleet management as carriers expand operations and modernise aircraft. Air India has been actively upgrading its fleet and service offerings as part of its broader transformation strategy following its acquisition by the Tata Group.
