Air India Boosts fleet with 30 More Boeing 737 MAX Jets
Air India expands its narrow-body fleet to meet surging domestic and regional demand.
Air India has placed an order for 30 additional fuel-efficient Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, reinforcing its aggressive fleet modernization strategy. The deal includes 20 Boeing 737-8 jets finalized this month and 10 Boeing 737-10 models that were previously unlisted on Boeing's public orders. These purchases exercise existing options from prior commitments, bringing Air India's total orders with Boeing to around 250 aircraft.
The Boeing 737 MAX family, equipped with advanced CFM LEAP-1B engines, delivers superior fuel efficiency, enhanced passenger comfort, and reliable performance for single-aisle operations. This makes the aircraft ideal for high-frequency domestic routes and expanding regional connectivity across India and South Asia. The order underscores the strong operational success of Air India's current 737-8 fleet, as highlighted by Boeing executives.
Campbell Wilson, CEO and Managing Director of Air India, emphasized the strategic importance: "This additional order for 30 Boeing 737 aircraft is part of our broader fleet strategy to position Air India firmly for the future, as a world-class global carrier that India deserves and the world expects." Boeing's regional VP also praised the partnership, noting the move supports growing connectivity needs in the region.

Since its privatization in January 2022, Air India has rapidly expanded its operations, adding nearly 170 aircraft through new deliveries, leases, the Vistara merger, and reactivating grounded planes. This latest Boeing commitment aligns with surging air travel demand in India, enabling deeper domestic penetration and new route launches while prioritizing sustainability and efficiency in fleet upgrades. The announcement comes amid parallel efforts, including Airbus selections, as the airline aims for a total order book exceeding 600 aircraft to solidify its position as a leading global carrier.
