Ahmedabad Police Arrest Father, Son For Killing Woman and Staging Hit-And-Run

A 22-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her father and brother in Ahmedabad, with the accused then attempting to make the death appear to be the result of a hit-and-run accident. Police arrested Mohammed Farooq and his son Mohammed Habil after an investigation into what was initially reported as a road accident uncovered several inconsistencies. The victim, identified as Sofia, reportedly died on the night of August 12 while travelling on a motorcycle with her brother. Police said the two had claimed that an unidentified vehicle struck their motorcycle, resulting in serious injuries. However, investigators later began questioning the circumstances surrounding the incident after finding evidence that did not support the accident version.

Sofia worked at Niki Hospital in the Bopal area, and police said Habil was taking her on a motorcycle on the night of the incident. According to the initial account, an unidentified vehicle allegedly hit their motorcycle while they were travelling, causing both siblings to fall and sustain injuries. Sofia suffered critical injuries and died, following which traffic police reached the location and began examining the case as a possible hit-and-run. The M Division police also became involved in the investigation. At that stage, there was no immediate indication that Sofia's death had been deliberately caused. The investigation subsequently took a different direction when officers began examining the alleged accident site, the motorcycle and available CCTV footage.

Police reportedly found that the location described by Habil did not contain evidence consistent with a collision involving another vehicle. Investigators also examined CCTV recordings from the surrounding area and found no clear indication of another vehicle being involved in the alleged crash. These discrepancies prompted police to question Habil more closely about what had happened that night. During questioning, investigators allegedly found contradictions in his account and began considering the possibility that the accident had been staged. Further interrogation eventually led police to suspect that Habil and his father had been involved in Sofia's death. The case was then investigated as a possible planned killing rather than a traffic accident.

According to police, the alleged motive was connected to concerns within the family over Sofia's personal life. Investigators said a video showing Sofia with a young man had circulated online some time earlier, which allegedly caused concern about social embarrassment among her family members. Police claimed that Farooq and Habil had questioned Sofia about her relationship and attempted to counsel her. Investigators later alleged that the father and son began planning her killing after suspecting that she was involved in a relationship with another person. Police said the plan was prepared several months before the incident, with the accused allegedly selecting a particular route and time when they believed there would be fewer people and less CCTV coverage.

On August 12, Farooq and Habil allegedly travelled on a motorcycle to the hospital where Sofia worked and took her with them while returning from Bopal. Police alleged that Habil had carried a hammer as part of the plan and attacked Sofia on the head during the journey. Investigators said she became unconscious after the initial assault, following which Habil allegedly dropped her from the motorcycle and struck her again. Police further alleged that the two men waited until Sofia stopped breathing before attempting to conceal the killing. They then reportedly continued travelling with her body on the motorcycle before placing it near the roadside. Investigators said Habil subsequently injured himself and damaged the motorcycle so that the incident would appear to have resulted from a collision with another vehicle.

The alleged staging initially led authorities to investigate the incident as a hit-and-run, but the absence of evidence supporting the account eventually raised doubts. About a month after Sofia's death, investigators reportedly uncovered the alleged murder conspiracy and shifted the focus of the case. The M Division police registered a murder case and arrested Farooq and Habil in connection with the alleged killing. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crime, including the planning of the alleged attack, the events following Sofia's death and the attempt to present the incident as a road accident. The arrests and allegations remain subject to the ongoing legal process.
