Afeela EV Project: Honda's $15.7 Billion Writedown Ends Ambitious Sedan Plans
Sony Honda Mobility cancels the Afeela 1 sedan and SUV after Honda scales back EV ambitions globally.
Earlier this month, Honda outlined a strategic overhaul that includes cancelling several EV initiatives targeted at the United States and recording a writedown of up to 2.5 trillion yen (approximately $15.7 billion). The automaker cited weaker-than-expected demand for EVs in Europe, increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers, and a less favourable regulatory and tariff environment in the U.S. under Donald Trump as key reasons behind the shift.
The Afeela 1 sedan was originally slated for launch in California later this year, with customer deliveries planned to begin in 2026. However, those plans have now been cancelled, along with the development of a second SUV model that was expected to debut around 2028. The company confirmed that customers who had placed reservations for the sedan in California will receive full refunds.
Despite the cancellation, Sony Honda Mobility stated that discussions between the two parent companies will continue regarding the future direction of the joint venture and potential areas of collaboration beyond the Afeela brand. Both Sony and Honda also indicated that the move is expected to have only a limited impact on their consolidated financial performance for the current fiscal year.

The decision reflects broader challenges facing the global electric vehicle industry, where traditional automakers are reassessing aggressive EV expansion plans amid evolving market dynamics. Increased competition from established players like Tesla and rapidly growing Chinese automakers, combined with shifting policy environments, are forcing companies to adopt more cautious and flexible strategies in the transition to electric mobility.
