Adani Ports Introduces Port of Refuge Mechanism For Ships In Distress
Adani Ports launches Port of Refuge to enhance maritime safety
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone has announced the launch of India’s first “Port of Refuge” mechanism, a significant step aimed at enhancing maritime safety and emergency response capabilities along the country’s coastline. The initiative is designed to provide safe harbour to vessels in distress, particularly during emergencies such as accidents, technical failures, or extreme weather conditions.
The Port of Refuge concept allows ships facing operational risks to enter a designated port area where they can stabilise their condition, undergo necessary repairs, or prevent further environmental and structural damage. By formalising this mechanism, Adani Ports aims to strengthen India’s preparedness in handling maritime crises while minimising risks to crew, cargo, and coastal ecosystems.
Officials said the move aligns with global maritime safety practices and reflects a growing emphasis on risk mitigation in increasingly busy shipping corridors. With India witnessing a steady rise in maritime traffic, the absence of a structured refuge system had long been identified as a gap in the country’s port infrastructure framework.

The initiative is also expected to support regulatory authorities and maritime agencies by offering a coordinated response system during emergencies. It could play a crucial role in preventing large-scale disasters, such as oil spills or vessel groundings, by enabling timely intervention and controlled handling of distressed ships.
Industry experts view the development as a proactive step toward modernising India’s maritime safety standards. They note that having a designated refuge mechanism can significantly reduce response time during crises and enhance coordination between port operators, coast guards, and environmental agencies.
As global shipping continues to expand, the introduction of a Port of Refuge system marks an important milestone in India’s maritime strategy. It underscores the need for robust infrastructure and policies to ensure safer navigation and sustainable management of coastal resources in the long term.
