4.2 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Doda, J&K; No Damage Reported
4.2 magnitude earthquake strikes Doda, J&K; no damage reported.
A moderate earthquake measuring 4.2 in magnitude shook the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir early Sunday morning, according to officials. The tremor, which occurred at approximately 1:25 a.m., was felt across the mountainous region, but no casualties or damage have been reported.
The Meteorological Department provided precise coordinates for the quake’s epicentre at latitude 33.08 degrees north and longitude 76.17 degrees east, situated just five kilometres below the Earth’s surface. Experts noted that the shallow depth contributed to stronger ground shaking in the Doda Valley, an area known for its fragile terrain and susceptibility to landslides, particularly during monsoon season.
Seismologists monitoring the region attributed the earthquake to ongoing tectonic activity along the Indian-Eurasian plate boundary, a known hotspot for frequent mild tremors in the Union Territory. While the magnitude was moderate, the underlying tectonic stress in the area underscores the potential for more significant seismic events.

Authorities have confirmed that there have been no injuries, structural collapses, or infrastructure damage reported so far. Local officials have urged residents to remain vigilant for possible aftershocks and advised avoiding steep slopes and vulnerable areas until conditions stabilize.
Doda district’s geography makes it particularly prone to seismic activity. In recent years, the region has experienced several tremors of varying magnitudes, highlighting the ongoing risks associated with the region’s mountainous terrain. Emergency services and disaster management teams remain on alert as a precautionary measure.
Experts emphasize that while earthquakes of this scale are usually non-destructive, preparedness remains key in regions like Doda. Residents are encouraged to follow safety protocols and stay informed about any advisories issued by the Meteorological Department or local authorities.
