Trade Unions’ Strike: Kerala Grinds to Halt as Trade Unions' Nationwide strike Shuts Down State
The shutdown disrupted daily life, with strong backing from trade unions and sectoral federations.
A 24-hour nationwide general strike, launched by the Joint Platform of 10 central trade unions (CTUs) and supported by Left-leaning organizations, brought Kerala to a complete standstill on Wednesday. The strike, protesting the central government’s alleged anti-labor policies, including the controversial four new labour codes, began at midnight on Tuesday and saw widespread participation across the CPI(M)-ruled state.
Public transport, government offices, shops, and most institutions remained closed, leaving roads deserted as buses and workers stayed off duty in solidarity. The shutdown disrupted daily life, with strong backing from trade unions and sectoral federations. Essential services, including healthcare, emergency response, and milk supply, were exempted to minimize public hardship.
The strike reflects growing discontent with the central government’s labor reforms, which unions claim undermine workers’ rights. Kerala’s total shutdown underscores the state’s strong labor movement, amplifying the nationwide call for policy changes.
