Maharashtra Budget Unveils Rs 2 Lakh Farm Loan Waiver, Power Bill Relief
State budget unveils major financial relief for farmers through loan waiver scheme and electricity bill support.
The Maharashtra government has announced a series of relief measures for farmers in the state budget, including a loan waiver of up to ₹2 lakh and concessions on electricity bills, in an effort to address mounting financial stress in the agriculture sector. The measures, unveiled during the presentation of the state budget, are aimed at easing the burden on small and marginal farmers who have been grappling with rising input costs, unpredictable weather patterns and fluctuating crop prices.
A key highlight of the announcement is the proposed waiver of crop loans up to ₹2 lakh for eligible farmers. The scheme is expected to benefit a large number of cultivators who have taken loans from cooperative and nationalised banks for agricultural activities. State officials said the relief measure is intended to reduce the debt burden on farmers and provide them with financial stability ahead of the upcoming agricultural seasons.
In addition to the loan waiver, the government has proposed relief on electricity bills for agricultural pump connections. Farmers who rely on electric pumps for irrigation often face significant power costs, and the new measures are aimed at reducing these expenses. Officials said the relief would help lower the operational costs of farming and improve overall farm viability.

The budget also includes provisions to support agricultural infrastructure and productivity. Investments are planned in irrigation projects, rural infrastructure and schemes aimed at improving water management. Authorities said these measures are designed to strengthen the long-term resilience of the agriculture sector while addressing immediate financial concerns faced by farmers.
Experts note that loan waivers have historically been used by several Indian states as a short-term relief measure for distressed farmers. While such initiatives provide immediate financial support, economists often emphasize the need for broader structural reforms such as improved market access, crop insurance coverage and better irrigation systems to ensure sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.
The Maharashtra government said the new measures reflect its commitment to supporting farmers and stabilising rural livelihoods. Implementation details and eligibility criteria for the loan waiver and power bill relief are expected to be released in the coming weeks as the state moves forward with executing the budget proposals.
