Annamalai Exit Suspense Deepens As Amit Shah Engages TN BJP Leadership Talks In Delhi
BJP leadership engages in talks as Annamalai’s resignation decision remains unresolved.
Uncertainty continues to surround the future of former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai after he held discussions with senior party leadership in New Delhi, even as Union Home Minister Amit Shah has summoned current state BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran to the capital for further consultations. The developments have triggered speculation over a possible reconciliation within the party’s Tamil Nadu unit.
Annamalai’s meeting with Amit Shah on Tuesday comes amid reports of prolonged internal differences within the state leadership following his removal as Tamil Nadu BJP president in 2025, a move aimed at facilitating electoral adjustments with regional ally AIADMK. Sources indicate that during the meeting, Annamalai expressed concerns over his role and differences with the current state unit leadership, although no formal resignation has yet been submitted.
Party sources suggest that Annamalai had initially made up his mind to step down and return to Chennai once his resignation was accepted, with an intention to maintain cordial relations with the central leadership. However, he was reportedly urged by senior leaders to reconsider his decision, leaving his next move uncertain. He is now expected to return to Chennai on June 4, depending on further discussions within the party.

In parallel, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran has travelled to Delhi for discussions with Amit Shah as the central leadership attempts to find an amicable resolution to the internal situation. The back-to-back meetings are being viewed as part of a broader effort to stabilise the party’s organisational structure in Tamil Nadu ahead of upcoming political challenges in the state.
According to party insiders, Annamalai also held preliminary discussions with BJP national general secretary B.L. Santhosh and party president Nitin Nabin before meeting Shah. Reports further suggest that he was offered a Rajya Sabha seat and a ministerial position, which he declined, preferring to continue working in Tamil Nadu politics. His supporters at the district level are also said to have reacted strongly, with several local functionaries reportedly stepping down following speculation about his possible exit.
As consultations continue in the national capital, the BJP leadership is attempting to balance internal equations while preventing further organisational disruption in Tamil Nadu. With key leaders still in dialogue, the final outcome remains uncertain, keeping the political suspense around Annamalai’s future unresolved.
