Mumbai Blaze Engulfs Kurla West Auto Shops, No Casualties Reported

Massive fire ravages auto parts shops in Mumbai’s Kurla.

A massive fire tore through a cluster of auto parts shops in Mumbai’s bustling Kurla West area on October 12, 2025, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky and sparking panic in the densely packed commercial hub. The blaze, which erupted in the early evening at Kamani Junction, gutted multiple shops along the LBS Marg, a busy thoroughfare, disrupting traffic and drawing crowds of onlookers as emergency services raced to the scene. Dramatic visuals circulating on social media captured towering flames and plumes of smoke, underscoring the intensity of the inferno that threatened nearby businesses and homes.

Local authorities reported that the fire broke out around 6:30 PM, rapidly spreading through the tightly packed shops filled with flammable materials like oil, tires, and automotive chemicals. Eight fire engines, supported by water tankers and ambulances, were deployed by the Mumbai Fire Brigade, with firefighters battling for hours to bring the blaze under control. No casualties or injuries were reported by late Sunday, a relief attributed to the swift evacuation of shop workers and passersby. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with early speculation pointing to an electrical short circuit, a common trigger in Mumbai’s aging commercial districts.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as shop owners scrambled to salvage goods while residents in nearby buildings were urged to stay clear. “The flames were so high, it looked like the whole street was burning,” said a local vendor, who captured the ordeal on his phone, with videos later going viral on X. The fire’s proximity to residential areas raised fears of a larger catastrophe, but timely intervention by the fire brigade prevented the blaze from spreading further. Mumbai police cordoned off the area, diverting traffic to ease access for emergency vehicles.

This incident marks the third major fire in Mumbai’s commercial zones this year, reigniting concerns about safety standards in crowded markets. Kurla, known for its vibrant auto repair and spare parts trade, has faced similar blazes in the past, often linked to faulty wiring or improper storage of combustibles. Authorities have promised a thorough probe, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) vowing to inspect safety compliance in the area.

As cleanup begins, shop owners face devastating losses, and the community braces for answers amid growing calls for stricter fire safety regulations.
