Vignesh Shivan Breaks Silence on Dhanush Fallout Saying Losing That Friendship Was Biggest Loss

Vignesh Shivan called losing Dhanush's friendship his biggest loss over the Netflix documentary row.

Filmmaker Vignesh Shivan has opened up about his long-standing fallout with actor-producer Dhanush, expressing deep regret over how their relationship deteriorated following a controversy involving a brief clip used in a documentary. Speaking during promotions for his upcoming film, Shivan described the breakdown of their bond as one of the most painful personal losses in his life.

The controversy dates back to the Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale, which featured actress Nayanthara. A three-second clip from the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan—produced by Dhanush and directed by Shivan—was allegedly used without proper clearance. This led to legal action and public friction between the parties, eventually escalating into a widely discussed industry dispute.

Reflecting on the issue, Shivan admitted that he feels “ashamed” about how things unfolded. He spoke emotionally about his admiration for Dhanush, even describing him as a “fatherly figure” in his life. The filmmaker revealed that losing that relationship remains his “biggest loss", suggesting that the conflict may have stemmed from misunderstandings rather than deliberate intent.

The bond between the two dates back to the making of Velaiilla Pattadhari (VIP), during which Shivan worked closely with Dhanush. He recalled those years fondly, highlighting the respect and personal connection they shared. However, the fallout has left a lasting impact, with Shivan acknowledging that such rifts are sometimes difficult to fully comprehend even in hindsight.

The dispute intensified in 2024 when Dhanush approached the Madras High Court, seeking compensation reportedly worth ₹10 crore for the use of the clip. The legal move also included Shivan, Nayanthara, and their production house, further straining professional and personal ties. In response, Nayanthara publicly criticised the actor, accusing him of harbouring long-standing grievances and letting ego influence his actions.

Despite the controversy, all three continue to remain active in their respective careers. Vignesh Shivan is gearing up for the release of his upcoming project Love Insurance Kompany, while Nayanthara and Dhanush have multiple films in the pipeline. Yet, Shivan’s candid remarks underline that beyond the legal battles and industry dynamics, the emotional cost of broken relationships often lingers far longer.
