Sonia Gandhi Memoir Row: Kerala CM Calls Publisher's Move 'Deeply Concerning'

Congress leader and Kerala Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan has described as “deeply concerning” reports that Penguin Random House India has decided not to publish Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s memoir. Reacting to the development, Satheesan criticised what he described as pressure on publishing institutions and said compromising editorial independence could have wider implications for democracy.

Satheesan made the remarks in a post on X following reports that the publishing house had dropped Belonging: A Journey of Love, described as Sonia Gandhi’s autobiography. The reported decision has triggered political reactions, with Satheesan expressing concern over the circumstances surrounding the publication controversy. He characterised the development as an example of what he called “institutional cowardice.”

In his remarks, Satheesan argued that publishing institutions have a responsibility to protect their independence and uphold the freedom to present accounts of public life. He said a publishing house that “compromises its spine compromises democracy itself,” linking editorial independence with the broader principles of democratic discourse. His comments came in response to the reported decision concerning Gandhi’s memoir.

Satheesan also stressed the importance of allowing historical and political accounts to be presented without interference.
