Indian sailor reportedly dies in Strait of Hormuz incident.

An Indian sailor from Gujarat died and five others were injured after a commercial dhow reportedly came under fire while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, amid escalating tensions linked to the ongoing US-Iran conflict in the region. The vessel, identified as the wooden dhow Al Faize Noore Sulemani 1, was carrying a crew of 18 when the incident occurred in the early hours of May 8. According to details provided by a seafarers’ association representative and shipping officials, the dhow had departed Dubai on May 7 and was en route to Mukkam in Yemen when it was caught in what has been described as crossfire in the strategic maritime corridor.

The deceased sailor has been identified as Altaf Talab Ker, who served as the engine driver aboard the vessel. He hailed from Salaya village in Gujarat’s Dwarka district. Officials confirmed his death but did not immediately provide further operational details regarding the circumstances of the incident, stating that assistance was being extended to the affected crew.

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route, has seen heightened maritime security risks amid broader geopolitical tensions.

Reports indicate that five additional crew members sustained injuries during the incident. The remaining sailors were later rescued by another vessel, MSV Prem Sagar-I (BDI-1491), around 7 am local time and transported safely back to Dubai Port by evening. They are currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.Officials from India’s shipping directorate confirmed awareness of the incident but declined to provide detailed commentary, citing the sensitivity of the situation.
