Thousands Flock Samaleswari Temple To Witness Dhabalamukhi Besha Ritual
Devotees gather early in Sambalpur to see Goddess Samaleswari in white attire on Mahalaya.
Thousands of devotees thronged the Samaleswari Temple in Sambalpur on Sunday to witness the revered ‘Dhabalamukhi Besha’ ritual, where Goddess Samaleswari is adorned in white attire, a rare departure from her usual red costume. Held on Mahalaya, a significant Hindu festival marking the end of Pitru Paksha, the event drew worshippers from across western Odisha and neighbouring states to offer prayers and perform ‘Pind Daan’ rituals for their ancestors.
The temple opened its doors at 5 AM to accommodate the large crowds, with devotees lining up from early morning to catch a glimpse of the deity in her ‘Dhabalamukhi Besha’, also known as ‘Ganga Darshan’. “It takes over six hours to adorn the goddess in her white incarnation, which she will wear until Tuesday afternoon,” said Sanjaya Babu, president of the Samaleswari Temple Trust Board. The ritual, symbolising purity and divine grace, is a highlight of Mahalaya, believed by devotees to carry the spiritual merit of a holy dip in the Ganga River.
To manage the influx, the temple authorities made extensive arrangements, including queue management systems, drinking water, and facilities for senior citizens, ensuring a smooth and peaceful ‘darshan’ experience. Adequate police presence was also deployed to maintain order. The event underscores the temple’s significance as a spiritual hub in western Odisha, drawing diverse crowds for its cultural and religious importance.

Following Mahalaya, the Samaleswari Temple will commence Navaratra Puja on Monday, a nine-day celebration honouring Goddess Durga. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik extended greetings to the public, praying for Maa Durga’s blessings. The vibrant turnout and meticulous preparations highlight the enduring spiritual legacy of the Samaleswari Temple.
