Mohan Bhagwat Says Krishna Consciousness Can Bring Harmony During New York ISKCON Visit

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat visited the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) temple in New York on Friday during his ongoing tour of the United States and participated in a food distribution initiative for homeless people. During his interaction with devotees, Bhagwat spoke about the role of consciousness in bringing people together in a world marked by differences, conflicts and competing interests. He said Krishna consciousness could provide a sense of unity despite the diversity and divisions visible in society. His remarks came during a visit that combined spiritual engagement with a community service initiative, as he interacted with devotees and took part in efforts to distribute food to people experiencing homelessness in New York.

Addressing the gathering at the temple, Bhagwat said the world today is witnessing numerous conflicts and forms of duality, making the idea of a unifying consciousness particularly important. He argued that people may differ in their identities, beliefs and circumstances, but there remains an underlying sense of unity that can connect them. "In today's world, there are so many conflicts, so many dualities. The only thing that unites is consciousness. That consciousness is Krishna Consciousness - we are one," Bhagwat said. He further linked this idea to the belief that the apparent differences and conflicts of the material world do not alter the deeper spiritual connection between individuals.

Bhagwat said the concept of Krishna consciousness, as he described it, encourages people to look beyond differences and recognise a common spiritual foundation. He suggested that such an understanding could have implications beyond individual religious practice and could contribute to greater harmony in society if it becomes part of people's thinking and actions. "We have been having it through these dualities of this world with the strong understanding that though there are so many diversities, dualities, conflicts, really it is all Krishna," he said. His remarks emphasised the idea that diversity need not necessarily result in division and that a broader sense of spiritual unity could help people approach differences in a more constructive manner.

The RSS chief also said that a wider acceptance of this understanding could help transform the way people view the world around them. "Everything is Krishna - if that world reaches every heart, the world will definitely be a better world," Bhagwat said. He added that such a transformation could make the world a more harmonious place for human beings, describing it as something beyond the material conditions visible in the present world. His comments at the temple focused on spiritual consciousness as a possible means of addressing divisions, rather than on any specific political or policy measure. The food distribution initiative during his visit also placed an emphasis on community service and helping people facing hardship.

Bhagwat's visit to the New York ISKCON temple comes ahead of his scheduled address to the Indian community at Madison Square Garden on August 29. The programme, titled the 'Universal Oneness Celebration', is being organised as part of events marking the RSS's centenary year. The upcoming gathering is expected to provide an opportunity for Bhagwat to engage with members of the Indian community in the United States as part of the organisation's centenary-year outreach. His remarks on unity and consciousness at the temple also come in the broader context of his engagements with the Indian diaspora during the overseas tour.

Bhagwat arrived in New York on Tuesday as part of a three-nation outreach tour covering the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The tour includes engagements with members of the Indian diaspora and programmes associated with the RSS's centenary year. His New York visit has included the interaction at the ISKCON temple and participation in the food distribution initiative. With his scheduled Madison Square Garden address approaching, Bhagwat's message in New York has centred on unity, spiritual consciousness and the need to look beyond differences in an increasingly divided world.
