Elon Musk Praises Zohran Mamdani’s Mayoral Bid, Calls Him “Future of Democratic Party”

Elon Musk hails Zohran Mamdani as the “future” of Democrats ahead of New York mayoral polls.

Billionaire Elon Musk, a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, has unexpectedly endorsed New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani as the "future of the Democratic Party" ahead of the November election. Musk shared a video clip on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, October 27, 2025, featuring New York Governor Kathy Hochul rallying supporters for the 33-year-old Democratic assemblyman. The endorsement, which caught many by surprise given Musk's conservative leanings, highlights Mamdani's progressive platform centred on housing affordability, rent control, and increasing taxes on high-income earners to address the city's escalating cost of living.

The clip, from an October 26 rally in New York City, showed Hochul urging the crowd to channel their energy into not just the mayoral race but also the 2026 midterms to "take back" Congress and the country. Joined by prominent progressives like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders, Hochul praised Mamdani's focus on economic issues despite their occasional ideological differences. She had previously backed him in a September opinion piece in The New York Times, writing that he possesses the "courage, urgency, and optimism" needed for the role. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, facing federal investigations, has opted not to seek re-election, intensifying the contest.

Mamdani's campaign has drawn sharp criticism from Republican figures, including Vice President JD Vance, following recent comments he made outside a Bronx mosque about the post-9/11 experiences of Muslim New Yorkers. Recalling how his aunt stopped using the subway due to feeling unsafe in her hijab, Mamdani accused rivals—Republican Curtis Sliwa, Independent Andrew Cuomo, and even Adams—of echoing Islamophobic tropes in their closing arguments. "I was advised to keep my faith to myself when I entered politics," he said, framing the remarks as a broader lesson in resilience for the city's diverse communities.

As the race tightens, Musk's nod—coupled with Hochul's high-profile support—positions Mamdani as a bridge between moderate Democrats and the party's left wing, potentially broadening his appeal in a polarised electorate. With early voting underway, the outcome could signal shifts in urban Democratic politics, balancing progressive ideals with pragmatic governance amid New York's ongoing affordability crisis. Analysts watch closely as Sliwa and Cuomo counter with attacks on Mamdani's "socialist" policies, setting the stage for a contentious finish.
