Better Sleep, Sharper Focus: How A Digital Detox May Help Your Brain

Neurologist highlights potential brain benefits of reducing digital exposure.

Digital detox retreats are gaining popularity as travellers look for ways to step away from constant notifications, work messages and social media updates. According to Dr Mahendra JV, HOD and consultant in the Department of Neurology at Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Bengaluru, the growing interest reflects concerns over the effects of constant digital stimulation on the brain and body. He noted that emerging research is increasingly examining the physiological impact of prolonged connectivity and the potential benefits of taking regular breaks from screens.

One of the potential effects of reducing digital stimulation is a more regulated stress response. Frequent notifications, multitasking and continuous online engagement can keep people mentally alert for long periods, contributing to feelings of stress and restlessness. Stepping away from such interruptions may help the nervous system settle and reduce some of the pressure associated with constantly responding to digital demands.

A digital break may also influence the brain’s reward and attention systems. Phones and apps frequently provide unpredictable prompts to check messages, updates and notifications, which can encourage repeated checking behaviour. Dr Mahendra explained that reducing this constant stimulation may support healthier patterns of attention and impulse control. Rather than expecting an immediate “reset”, he emphasised that meaningful changes in digital habits are more likely to develop through sustained breaks and consistent changes in screen use.

Sleep is another area that can benefit from reducing screen exposure, particularly around bedtime. Screen use in the evening can interfere with the body’s natural sleep signals and make it harder to wind down. Creating a period without devices before sleeping may therefore help support a more regular sleep routine. Reduced screen exposure can also give the eyes a break from prolonged viewing, potentially easing some of the tiredness associated with extended device use.

Reducing screen time may further provide an opportunity for cognitive recovery by limiting the repeated interruptions caused by notifications and constant switching between digital activities. Each interruption can require attention to shift and then return to the original task, while prolonged social media use can contribute to mental overload. Spending less time on these platforms may create more space for sustained attention and reduce some of the anxiety or low mood associated with excessive online engagement.

Dr Mahendra noted that some people may experience a sense of relief after staying away from screens for a day or two, but longer-term changes require consistent digital habits. He explained that changes involving the brain’s reward system take longer and suggested that one to two weeks may be a more realistic period for noticeable adjustment. He also cautioned that the initial days of reducing screen use can involve restlessness or irritability before the new routine becomes easier to maintain.
